Is Vegan/vegetarian Food Always Halal?

According to Islamic law, if an animal is alive and slaughtered according to the proper process it will make the meat halal. If one doesn’t consume this type of food, then their only natural alternative would be vegetables/grains/nuts which have no source of life within them. While it is true that these items are not considered to be meat, there’s a big chance that they might contain many other haram ingredients such as carrageenan gum and gelatin.

Many claim that Vanilla Extract is indeed Halal because it is made from Vanilla Beans or Vanilla Seeds, but this isn’t the case. Most vanilla extracts are not made with alcohol (ethanol) which is Halal; instead, they are made with non-Halal ingredients like propylene glycol or even worse, petroleum-based chemicals!

There’s also Coffee-Mate Original Creamer which contains NO animal products but uses a Halal-certified flavor, however, the main ingredient is glycerine which isn’t allowed in our diet.

Well, some Vegetarians are extremely selective about their ingredients while others have no idea what they’re consuming. Many contain Honey, Gelatin, Lard/Tallow/Lardons which are all Haram.

The most important advice would be to always check the label of your food before consuming it even if it’s vegetarian or vegan. The ingredients list isn’t just written in English; you might need to read it in the original language and there might be other languages as well.

There’s also a big chance that your Vegetarian food contains Garlic and Onions which aren’t Halal.
